About the University-Industry Research Consortium on the Sustainability of Tropical Karsts Landscape in Malaysia

A collaboration between the Ministry of Higher Education and YTL Cement, supported by five top local universities. YTL Cement is awarding scholarships to 40 Masters and PhD students to research Tropical Limestone Karsts in Malaysia.

The Research Consortium takes a multi-disciplinary approach to achieve a balance between conservation of natural resources and development.

Why Tropical Limestone Karst Landscape?

Limestone hills and tropical karst landscapes, with their unique and captivating allure, often capture public fascination while holding significant biological, historical, and archaeological value. However, karst landscapes in Malaysia constitute less than 3% of the terrain, leading to conflicts between industrial utilisation for construction and resource extraction, and the imperative for preservation due to their scarcity.

This research endeavour provides multidimensional insights crucial for planners and policymakers in determining how these resources should be managed for heritage conservation or sustainable utilisation. YTL Cement is responsible for ensuring the enduring preservation of the Tropical Limestone Karst Landscape's sustainability, balancing the nation's industrial needs with the imperative to protect this invaluable natural heritage.
